1. When a Standard Closure Is Not Enough

A South American customer packaging their products in aluminum bottles faced a classic dilemma: their packaging line was built around a 38mm screw-cap finish, yet the neck geometry of their aluminum bottles was subtly different from the glass and PET containers most closure suppliers design for. Aluminum bottles behave differently from glass and plastic when it comes to closure fit. The neck finish tolerances of extruded or drawn aluminum bodies can vary more than those of standardized glass finishes, and the coating applied to the metal surface changes the friction and the effective thread profile. A cap designed to nominal GPI/SPI 400 dimensions may feel loose, bind, or skip threads when applied to a coated aluminum neck.

4. The Product: 38mm Unishell Cap with Pressure-Sensitive Liner

The closure at the heart of this case is a 38mm silver Unishell cap, manufactured from food-grade electrolytic tinplate with a matte brushed finish. It follows the widely used 38/400 GPI/SPI thread standard, which makes it compatible with a broad range of capping equipment.

What makes it special for this application is the pressure-sensitive (PS) liner. Unlike heat-induction liners that require an additional sealing station, a PS liner creates an immediate, conforming seal under the application torque of the capping head. This is a decisive advantage on aluminum bottles, where the liner must adapt to slight variations in the bottle rim while the cap is being applied at line speed. The bright white liner sits flush in the cap interior, and it has been tested for food-contact compliance, giving the customer both sealing performance and regulatory confidence in one component.

The customer's engineers will now run these caps through their real production equipment, measuring application torque, removal torque, and seal performance against their own acceptance criteria. Because the caps were pre-fitted to their actual bottle neck finish, we expect clean first-pass results — and we are ready to scale to volume production with the same tooling parameters used for the samples, so that what they validated on the line is exactly what they will receive in bulk.
